Statement of this project: There is a tremendous amount of information, about a wide variety of subject in the Fade to Black episodes. The plan is to inject this knowledge of data into UniWiki, to create an inter-connected, transparent, easily searchable database! Upon creating the transcripts, we’re creating keywords, connecting together various subjects, that can bring us closer to the truth.

Guide – How to Transcript Fade to Black Interviews

If you would like to help out, and get involved, here’s a guide about how to create a transcript from Fade to Black shows. If you decide, to start working on one of the show/interview, make sure you indicate here, or on Slack, to avoid double-work.

First Section: Acquire the Transcript:

Choose and interview, from the Fade to Black Youtube Channel. Check if the interview has available subtitle/CC option. You can find out easily, if you go to the right-bottom corner of the video, and see the following icon:

Then click on the “more” button below the video, and open the transcript:

Once you opened, the full transcript will reveal on the right side, below the video. Next you need to switch off the timestamps, by clicking the “more” button within the transcript section:

Now, you need to copy all the data, and paste it to an editing interface, like Notepad, or Word:

MS Word would be more beneficial, the automatic spelling check will help during editing.

Second Section: Editing the Transcript:

This take the majority of the time. The original transcript is a continuous text, without:

Capital letters
Punctuation
Indication about who is currently speaking

All of these are needs to be modified; and add manually! The easiest way to do this, is to open the video on YouTube, and you editor software, and switch back-an-fort in between them, while pausing the video / editing the transcript. You might want to create transcript only for the interview, but you can choose to edit the full-length show, if you decide to do so.

Jimmy: And this is about unifying - not only the community - but gathering all of our information, in a positive way. And getting it all centralized, and together, with the correct contributors. And not go negative! This is the positive side of it, and unifying all of the knowledge. Because the knowledge is out there, the community is out there. We need a central depository of all of this knowledge, and that's what Uniwiki is all about. And in a very positive sense, that is our manifesto! And now... It's a great thing to talk about, but it's another thing to deliver the package. Well, we have delivered it.
Richard: I'm looking at the page, I've got it right here in front of me. Uniwiki. And it's just started, so I don't think anyone need should expect, to find articles in here yet. But it's there!
Jimmy: The engine is built, the stuff that is going on...
Richard: It's kind of an open source project, so that people can go in, and...
Jimmy: You have to register, and get accepted, and...
Richard: Are you running this? Is this you, running it?
Jimmy: No... Well, yes actually, because it's a community. So yes, is the short answer. John Lund and his software team wrote the engine. The concept is a community concept. It's John's vision, he's... You know, obviously there needs to be somebody at the top of the software chain, to build this monster of a platform. But everything is done! It's done! So, when we are talking about unifying, and positivity, and taking steps forward, and doing it. Well, you have to actually do it, and implement it.

It is also important, to stay faithful to the original conversations, make sure you do not change the narrative, point of views, message, as you are representing individuals, and Fade to Black. In the other hand, the transcript needs to be understandable by its own, without the radio show. Therefore, it needs to be reviewed one more time, with a fresh eye, to filter out double words, or make minor changes, to make sure that the text is understandable, like you were reading it to the first time. So, there is a fine balance there, within a faithful word-to-word; and an understandable modified representation of the show.
